the way i did mine was i soaked it in a plastic bin with a heavy rock on top of the driftwood to keep it submerged for about a week and a half. at that point it was water logged so when i put it into my tank, it went right to the bottom. hope that helps!

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll probably try to water log it, that way I can just put it in the tank without having to worry about hiding any rocks.

I really have no idea what kind of wood it is. I bought it at an aquarium store but it may have been intended for reptiles, or for me to weigh it down. They sold pieces that were already fixed to slate, but they were more expensive and the formations weren't as nice.
