Get some red poetry clay. You can get it at craft stores. It's called Mexican red clay. Take a chunk out and let it dry till it gets hard then break it into little pieces. It works well putting a couple pieces under the harder to grow plants or all of them. Lighting and substrates are the two most important things you need to get right.

I use a halogen light and two t5 strip lights because my tank is almost 3' tall.
