So after my test run with my 10gal (http://fishtanktv.com/profiles/blogs/frist-attempt-at-dirted-tank) I really want to convert my bigger tank. The only problem is there is very little room for light and its pretty deep.

Has anyone had any success dirting and planting a tall 35gal hexagon tank?  Its like 28inches deep and the hood only has a 18inch single bulb florescent on it (see pic).  I would really like to convert this tank.

I have a 30 hex and my plants didn't do well at first. So i switched to dirt substrate and got bigger lights at Walmart. I also leave them on at 8 hours a day to compensate for how deep it is. The plants are showing signs of improvement now and have new growth. The lights are larger than the hood so I just take it off when there isn't any visitors here. But I use one fluorescent and one white strip lights. They actually say grow light on them at Walmart.

cool thanks do you have a picture of it, do you still have the slandered hood or did you make one.  I am thinking I might have to make one out of plexiglass so I can add light.

I still have the hood that came with the tank, but don't use it unless I have guests cause its in my dining room, lol. But the strip lights I bought are about a foot longer than the tank diameter so I just sit them on top of the tank. I have videos of it on here you can check out. I'm adding some more plants tonight so I will put up a update when finished.
