definitely an aqua clear in my opinion. They work great and have an amazing rate of water flow and are super quiet. They are very reliable filters. Will last for years.
The next best is a marine land penguin or any marine land filter.Super puiet and good water flow.It has a never need replacing bio wheel filter.
I used to be an eheim fanboy as well but found the recommended cannister for my 6ft tank wasn't enough and so when shopping for an additional filter I picked up a Fluval cannister. I since replaced the eheim with a second fluval (redundancy!) and they've been kicking along for years keeping hte tank VERY clean.
Since moving to my bigger tank I've invested in an FX5 and it seems to do the job quite well. I haven't had it long enough to rave about it but I've been happy with Fluval's simple yet effective and reliable mechanics.
I was thinking the same thing. :-) In my FX5 I just clean the sponges and I only did it after the first month because I wanted to remove the carbon tray. I had that to help with the dirt that was initial floating. Carbon needed to go because it pulls some liquid fert items out of the water like iron for example.
I don't see me needing to break that filter down until early next year. Then it will not need anything new. Just rinsing of the sponges.
I run eheim all the way, they'll keep kickin for years and years, as long as you maintain them correctly, i had an old 2250 once, wich was 15 years old, never had anything replaced, ran like brand new, and very quiet too, now i run a 2028 canister, great filter, but it's critical that this filter is maintained correctly, otherwise it will leak, it's just a matter of time. I plan on replacing this with a 2080, since i'm going to need something more powerfull to run the co2 reactor i plan on putting on the tank. I also run an old 2224 on my 45 gal, it's been running for years now, makes no noise at all, great little filter, and very effective too.
Iv'e tried others like fluval, tetratech, atman and so on, but their power usage is much more than eheim in comparison to their flow rate, also, depending on the filter media you use, other pumps also gets much more restricted than eheim, using the same materials as in my eheims, i also found them much less effective at keeping the water clean and clear, and finally, they all seem to make much more noise too.
In short: Eheim all the way. :)
I am a big fan of Aqueon especially for smaller tanks. AquaClear I think is right up there again with smaller tanks.
Canister wise I am a big big big fan of Fluval. I have owned the 304, 404 and the fx5. I have owned the first two for like 6 years and they are still going strong. The fx5 for 2 years and the filter is a beast (in a good way)
Filters I hate: The Magnum 350.
