My piece still won't sink after years. I took a piece of slate big enough to weigh it down, drilled holes through the slate, then used stainless steel screws to go through the holes into the base of the wood.

This is more of a log piece.  I'm thinking about drilling a hole and pouring lead into it.  Then using Anubias plant to root and hide where I had to drill it for lead if it shows too much.

 

If it were more of a vertical piece your slate suggestion would be perfect.  I've got more of a coin wood piece were it could get laid heads or tails.  I hate having to nail it down to a side.

 

Thinking the lead option gives me better options and if I drill it right it should be easy to hide.

I put 2 screws in to mine put to s cups on it and stuck it to the bottom of the tank or side .
