Do betta fish need and airstone?

I tried putting two betta fish into my 20 gallon planted tank and they don't look so hot right now the female is floating with it's head pointed straight down and the male isn't doing anything? Wtf mate! Will some experience betta keepers help a brother out!!!

They could have been sick when you brought them home from the store. I have two a male and female in a 30 gallon and they are happy as can be. The male usually chills on the bottom of the tank and uses his tail to anchor himself to the plants or ornaments. Try using aquarium salt it is a stress reliever but make sure you follow the instructions for fresh water applications.

Air stones have no purpose except for water circulation. They look cool though.

Don't forget that they also break the surface tension, but I agree with your overall point Jeremy. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Guppies like to swim up and down the bubbles.
