dirt can be quite messy at times.

Pulling plants out slowly will help keep the dirt from coming up and when you plant plants, you do it slowly.

As for species of pleco and loaches that doesn't harm your plants...there are a few of them out there. I can name them but it is always wise to research them before putting in a planted tank.

Dirt is messy BUT when your plants roots get in it the plants take off

if you need to take a plant out for whatever reason do it as slow as possible and you won't make too much mess, I only got a tiny bit of dirt into the water when removing afew swords

I've got a pleco in my dirted tank and its fine, theres enough gravel that he doesn't go deep enough to get to the dirt (when he does move gravel about that is)

hey your a new member i'm glad your checking out the forums and learning from it.  you can have fish and stuff in there with dirt you'd gonna want to cap it for it doesn't come up capp it with gravel and you won't have to worry about your plants messing it up
yea its wicked messy.. i dirted my 10 gallon 5 days ago and dirt debris is still floating around after 2 pretty sizable water changes. it takes a while to settle
mine was pretty messy once i started it but now its fine. and i have a pleco in mine and its fine
How is everyone having such a problem with mess. I had some cloudiness, but nothing like mess for days. Was the water put in too fast?
yea i definitely added water too quickly
Follow the advice of making sure you cap it correctly.  My first dirted tank, I thought I didn't need so much.  I ended up having to redo it since it muddied up the water pretty good.
