My local petco has recently stocked some algae eating shrimp. They are named Japanese algae eating shrimp. The shrimp are a grayish clear and about an inch and a half long. I'm really considering getting shrimp because I heard they're really good at controlling algae and I have a problem. Also does anyone know what type of shrimp this is because I really doubt it's called Japanese algae eating shrimp. I heard really good things about shrimp and algae is this true?

its most likely ghost shrimp if its cheap. The best shrimp though out there are Red Cherry Shrimp or other similar strains as they are known to consume more different types of algae than other shrimps.
I think 1.5" is too big for ghosts in a pet store. Probably Caridina multidentata or Amano shrimp. Great shrimp to have in a planted tank.
Are they good at eating algae? And how many would be enough for my 20 gallon to keep my plants algae free? (:
The name was changed to multidentata Vinny. Japonica is still used & everyone knows what you're talking about when someone says japonica. Just letting you know. Hope yours are doing well.
