Do you have a strategy for where you place your filter intake, heater, thermometer, etc. in the tank? What's your first priority with that; water movement? visibility? etc. I'd like to know what thought goes into it and how people decide where to put those things in the tank...

The filter I always put near the corner of the tank so the water will circulate around the tank.the heater not too sure about I have mine close to the filter or you can put it in the other corner .I would say water movement would be top priority. That is a good ?
And keep the intake at least an inch from the substrate /sand .
I keep my heater by the filter because I want it near the most water flow. Now, this is of course not proven science but in my mind the heat is able to be distributed faster, maybe better. That is not science, it's just my thought on it.
I keep my filtration system in the corner but I make sure that the water can move around everything in the tank. I don't want corners that have debris caught in the rocks or plants because of restricted water flow. So even if its i the corner it can still be effective.
I used to think the filter in the tank was unattractive, I guess I now see it as part of the environment. I think since I keep most of the equipment together then it doesn't seem so bad. I do, however, keep my thermometer on the opposite end of the tank from the heater. I also keep a small thermometer strip closer to the heater so I know if I've got a good and relatively even temp. The thermometer strip is on the side where it can't be seen until I walk over there and look. My main thermometer is a pond thermometer fixed to the tank wall. Its in the back primarily hidden behind some plants.
I want a pretty tank. I want it to be as natural looking as possible without a lot of equipment showing. Sometimes that is possible (like with thermometers and stuff) but other times my own idea of pretty has to be altered for the well being of the tank. My big tank is against the wall and it has a taxidermy piranha on top of the filter. You can always decorate the top of your filter :-)
There's another long winded answer from me. :-)
