Hi all,
I am about to set up a second tank, mainly for quarantine, but also to grow plants. I was looking around for cheap substrate and came across videos talking about 'dirt', is this dirt from my back garden or is this something I should go and buy? I need to get on to this asap to any comments will be welcomed...... also the peat..... is this regular garden peat they on about?
Cheers

I must admit, I hate sand and it messes up my internal filter. I wont add the plants yet tomorrow then, I will check Halfords for clay pebbles... they are the only place I can think up that might do it. I find all this so interesting I am really pleased with all your suggestions :)
Automotive supply stores sell clay pebbles for absorbing oil slicks. Its 100% clay and 100% safe. There is also non-clumping kitty litter. Make sure its non-clumping and contains no additives. Flourite is a brand name for clay and is excellent.
If you get gravel make sure its not small like sand.
The filter is kicking up a storm in the tank at the moment.....the plants didnt come today so I am going in search of cat litter or clay pebble
''think it looks kinda ugly seeing the dirt under the sand in the front''..... Logan, funnily enough, I think it looks cool! :)
I add peat to my dirt to help the clay become more available to the plant roots. There is a book that explains why and how it works too. The peat doesn't seem to hurt anything when used in small amounts.
