WIERD STUFF GROWING ON MY NEWLY ADDED DRIFTWOOD

LOOKING TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS OR KNOWS WHAT TO DO. BOUGHT A PIECE OF DRIFTWOOD FROM PETS-MART. WOULD NOT SINK SO I BOILED IT TO WATER LOG IT, LET IT COOL OFF THEN ADDED IT TO MY NEW 55GAL DIRT TANK. (DRIFTWOOD ONLY) GREW SOME WHITE/CLEAR SLIMY STUFF ALL OVER IT. TOOK IT OUT AND CLEANED IT VERY WELL THEN PUT IT BACK IN THE TANK. THE STUFF CAME BACK OVERNIGHT. DID THE CLEANING AND PUT IT BACK IN THE TANK FOR DAYS IN A ROW. I LEFT IT FOR A ABOUT 4-5 DAYS AND THEN I GOT THESE LITTLE RED-BROWN WORMS MOVING IN THE WHITE/CLEAR SLIMY STUFF. NEXT DAY I HAD ALL TYPES OF SNAILS. TWO WEEKS LATER WHITE STUFF HAS CLEARED UP IN SOME AREAS OF THE DRIFTWOOD BUT IT SEEMS IT JUST WONT GO AWAY. ITS A SWEET PIECE OF DRIFTWOOD SO I DON'T WANT TO GET RID OF IT. SOMEONE MENTIONED TO ME THAT IT COULD BE BROWN ALGAE?

55 GAL TANK, TWO 75 WATT PLANT BULBS (FLORESCENT), GOOD FILTRATION, DIRT/FLUORITE SUB, PLANTS, RAINBOW FISH, SHRIMP, 2 OTOSINCLUS.

ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT,

It natural...bacteria are decomposing the wood. If you boil it for so time it should help. How long did you boil it for? I sanded all the loose bark of of my wood and it never showed up again.

I have a question for you; Did you added salt wile you were boiling the driftwood? Salt help to kill off many unwanted pest on your wood. After that you should let it sit in a area where is mostly sunny, this will also help to kill off fungus.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE! I BOILED THE WOOD FOR APROX 10-15MIN, I DID NOT USE SALT. WILL ANY SALT WORK LIKE SEA SALT OR SHOULD I USE TABLE SALT? WHAT IS A GOOD AMOUNT TO USE LIKE 3-4 TABLE SPOONS PER GALLON?

You might want to boil it for three to four hours, 10-15 mins isnt enough. Also you might want to use sea salt two or three tablespoon should be enough for those two pieces.

GOOD DEAL! I WILL TAKE THE WOOD OUT TOMORROW, BOIL IT FOR 3-4 HOURS WITH SEA SALT, THEN LET IT SIT OUT IN THE SUN THURSDAY FOR A FEW HOURS AND WILL GIVE YOU THE UPDATE OVER THE WEEKEND. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

did you buy this in the reptile section or fish section?

i have a few video explaining on how to boil driftwood.

It doesn't matter how many times you scrap off it or boil it.

THe process of decaying in the wood will result in fungus as you see (white fungus on wood). Give it a month or so and sometime your fish will eat them. It should go away.

BTW: no need for CAP LOCK!

SORRY ABOUT THE (CAPS LOCK) IM NOT YELLIN AT ANYONE HERE TRUST ME....LOL MY COMPUTER SYSTEM AT WORK (PEACHTREE ACCOUNTING) ONLY SEARCHES WITH CAPS LOCK. I USUALLY DONT EVEN NOTICE IM SO USED TO IT NOW SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH WHILE ON ONLINE. but I will keep a good mind if it bothers people.

Hmoobthor, I will take a look at the vids you post for future further info. I have already started the boil process so i might as well go through with it. I will post results over the weekend.

On Wednesday night i boiled the driftwood in sea salt for 4 hours, let it sit in the sun all day Thursday. I installed it back in the tank on Thursday night. Now 3 days later it is still looking good however there is only a few small spots on the driftwood that the white stuff came back, but no where near what it was. instead of it getting worse each day it seems to be fine now and not out of control like it was. thanks for the advise everyone!
