sand works fine as a cap for dirt. the general rule is 1 inch - 1.5 inches of sand for every inch of dirt.  i have used pool filter sand in my tanks and it works great but i've also heard that play sand and other types work well too.  you just have to poke the substrate every so often to make sure the dirt doesn't become anaerobic.  not sure about the fluval stratum but I would assume it would be fine kept in there.

Sand is great, If you ever want new/different sand for cheap try cement sand its like $2 for a 80lbs bag. Once you go dirt you wont ever go back... When re-doing your tank, shut it down and transfer your fish into a bucket. then wash out your sand, add dirt, i(d use organic potting soil)  and add1 - 2 inches of it. then cap with your sand and plant!
