well u will need enough to put down a 1" layer maybe 1 1/2" layer. then u will also need something to cap(cover) ur dirt with. be it gravel, sand, fluorite, saftsorb, non clumping cat litter. ur canister filter won't hurt ur tank or the dirt. and no u don't need to gravel vac a dirted tank or a planted tank ever for that matter. make sure after u add dirt and u cap it add water slowly so u don't kick up dirt and u will have less work to do after. if u do kick up dirt or wen u fill ur tank and its all messy just wc once a day 50% for a week or so and it will clear up and then ur set.
u could add red clay to the dirt if ud like and u can also try looking up "mineralizing dirt" so it last longer but yea thats basically it.
