Most people on here I have noticed say only an inch of dirt in the tank, but I do a lot more than that, My 40gallon I think has 2inches of dirt in the bottom and 2 inch sand cap, which many people claim that sand is bad to use as a cap , since it stops air flow to the dirt and creates anaerobic bacteria. For some reason unknown to me many people think it is bad for your tank, but It is something that has been used in deep sand beds for salt water, that bacteria is good for your tank it helps clean your water. Anyway if I was doing a 55 I would do like 3inches of dirt add clay and I would do like 3 inches of sand to cap it. That Is just how I would do it, that would allow you to run the tank longer than 1inch of dirt. Also water changes are a must, when I start a new tank I try to do one or 2 big water changes a day for at least a week, sand also keeps the dirt from leaching into the water as badly.
