i also have a question i modded my aqueon10 in my 10 gallon in which i replaced the cartdrigre with the aquaclear foam and i added a biomax mesh bag in there as well to increase surface area does the water have to be constanly running through the biomax to get rid of ammonia... Or no because i have deep down into the filter so it wont block debris into the pad

You could always add a bubbler to increase the oxygen in the water. If you are getting good test numbers then you really don't have much to worry about. Make sure to do the water changes and you should be good. If they haven't died after a week, I don't think you have a serious problems.

also for the filter question, yes you have to have the water hit the filter media for it to help clean the water. The bacteria live on the media and as the water hits it, the bacteria clean it. Again, water changes will deal with any ammonia problems.

Are you fish still gulping for air or have things settled down?
