Only advantage is its easier to grow carpeting plants in sand than it is gravel. Also looks a lot nicer in my opinion than gravel

dont really need to vacuum if you have sand and plants. I have sand in my tanks and I dont vac, and i dont see any waste. sand stays clean. I know how to vac sand for non planted tanks, maybe ill do a video on it.

If you must use sand use pool sand. But the best way to cover dirt is with Turface or Oil-sorb. Commercially available products like Flourite is also excellent but expensive.

I just read a blog by someone that uses bird sand in his tank to increase general hardness..  does he mean the stuff they sell as "grit" for parakeets and the like?
