I have heard alot of different ways to cycle a tank .Without fish by dropping pieces of food in the tank and letting it break down over time I dont like this method.Fish in method by using guppies letting the fish waste begin the process and risk sacraficing fish because of the spikes ,I surely dont like this method. Chemicals that instantly cycle the tank I love this method LOL but I know it has to have some sort of negative effect ? What about saving half the water from a established tank and adding it to the tank ? Im kind of confused about it and when to add plants and fish if possible want to know the fastest way to cycle a tank but one that works well ?

The best way to do it is to use cycle media from another tank that's already cycled be it gravel decorations plants or filter media. Tht way te time it takes ur tank to cycles is cut shorter

To answer the questions of wen to add plants an fish. Plants can go in day 1. Even before it finishes cycling Fish are gonna have to wait till fhe tank is cycled but u can put them In anytime before at ur own risk

If you already have a tank running you should just transfer some of the filter media to the new tanks filter that way the bacteria is there right away. This would be the fastest way I believe.

Hi

when i first set my tank up i didnt know anything about "cycling" and i used nurtafin cycle. 3 days it started the process i put my fish in on the 4th day and everything seemed ok my amonia was at about 0.5 but i was doing 20lt water changes and after a week or so the amonia had droped to 0 and my nitrite was at 0 the only higher reading i have now is my nirtate that i cant seem to get below 25ppm

so for me chemical evertime (unless somone has better ideas) lol

Yeah, you can put in the fish right away. Just do more water changes than usual. This way you get rid of the nitrogenous waste without waiting for the bacteria to do it. Eventually beneficial bacteria will populate the surface areas of the tank and you'll be all set .

Unless you have a ton of plants and few fish (Walstad method) the tank never truly "cycles" anyway. You still have to do water changes. Many professional Discus breeders don't even bother with filters and cycling. They just dump out 90% of the water everyday and replace it with freshwater.

I found the best method is to use the sponge in you filter and just squeeze while in the tank. Bacteria on it will pour onto the water and take hold. I've done this on one of my tanks and it cycled in less then 3 days. Tested the water for a 2 weeks, every other day, and it work wonderfully for me.

Id say if you just fill a tank at least 30% with water from another cycled tank then thats pretty much an instant cycle right there, i did that with my 20 to 29 and I didnt lose any fish, but I also used the filter media from the 20 on the 29, so cycled water plus used filter media = instant cycle.
