Hey everyone, I really want to see my tank with awesome live plants but I feel like they will be so much better with dirt! My tanks established for over a year now and I know how to move all my fish and stuff around but I have a few questions regarding dirt.
Basically, I don't know what kind of dirt to use. I guess I could use organic potting soil? Like miracle gro organic choice? I've used that before to plant stuff in like flower pots and it lacks those little fertilizer balls and perlite. Thoughts?
Also I guess it's a good idea to mix a little pebbles in the dirt too for roots to grab onto right?
Plus, I want to put some crushed red clay under the dirt level for the plants. Anyone done this before?

Thanks guys any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes use the Miracle grow ORGANIC potting soil and yes put clay with the dirt and it doesn't hurt to add gravel In with the dirt. Just make your dirt/clay/gravel mix layer only like1" max and the cap 1"-1 1/2"

I personally dont llike Miracle Grow, Cause it has chicken poop in it. (read the ingredients) But thats just me, as you can see, it works for others. I use SuperSoil from the Home Depot. Try to save as much of the tank's water to add back to the tank so the cycle wont take as long. Have fun, post pics.

Thanks to both of you. I already bought the miracle grow organic soil so I'm gonna keep it. Yes I was concerned about the poop but my plan is to put the dirt in buckets and pour water over it and let it settle then squeeze out all the soil like a sponge and add all the soil to another bucket once rung out. I'm gonna do this two or three times to try and reduce mud and murk.
Thanks again! I will post pics when it's done!
