I just had my 120 moved by an aquarium service. I had them add dirt before setting it up. I asked him when I could do a water change. He said in over a month! Mainly because the move included about a 75% water change and he wanted to preserve as much bacteria as possible so I won't have to reestablish the tank. My trouble is the dirt! Will tannins go away without a water change? And will I be over run with algae?

Wtf that company is retarded sorry to say... Wen u first dirt a tank u need to do water changes daily at least 50% daily the first week then every 2 day the second week u do this because of the explosion of excess nutrients dirt trows out in ur water. U should have asked them wat dirt they used, just to make sure they were starting it right from the start. The tannis goes away with water changes. Soo guess what forget wat ur " aquarium service" ppl said about waterchanges. U have to be doing daily waterchanges and ur tank should be heavily planted if they used a dirt layer bigger than 1 1/2 ". Soo much can go wron with dirt tank and the advice they gave u of no waterchanges for a month would worry me if it was my tank

yeah, do the water changes as much as possible. If the bacteria have already established in your filter, you should be fine.

Did this "service" add bacteria to the tank? If not, you're going to have to do water changes to get rid of all the waste. And if they did add bacteria, you won't lose it doing water changes because beneficial bacteria is not in the water column. Its attached to surfaces in the tank like filter media.  So definitely do water changes.

U clean filters as much u can be it each week every 2 weeks or every month. Other than that u don't change ur filter just rinse out the sponge or biomedia or water u have in ur filter

Really!!! Keeping the base nutrients is what's important. I always thought completely changing the sponge helps. I mean if its black i get rid of it.

U just rinse the sponge out because it still works. Most beneficial bacteria is on the sponge as well so replacing the sponge is getting rid of lots of benificial bacteria. I've had same sponge in my hob filter for 1yr now still cleans tank like before no problems wat so ever.

If the sponge is really black you can throw it in the washing machine without detergent. The bacteria will be fine and the sponge will be a lot cleaner. Not sure what you mean by "base nutrients".
