I am going to setup a 55 gallon heavily planted tank. I was wonderin if I could keep 6 rainbows in there? And maybe 2 or so silver dollars? Will this work? It is going to have a penguin bio-wheel 400 for filtration. Also, could you give me some other stocking ideas?

This is hands down the coolest web site to answer you question.  Someone shared it with me a few months back when I thought I was over stocked:  http://aqadvisor.com/

I'm not too sure how silver dollars would do with rainbows.  It's been my opinion that they are a little shy but I might be wrong.  I haven't looked at that fish in a long time.

I have 4 Bosemanis in my current tank.  Great fish and fun to watch.

I try to stock the tank with fish for all layers.  Top - hatchet fish, middle - tetras, bottom - catfish like corrys

Rainbows do grow quite big but should be fine in a 55g.

I have heard that once silver dollars grow up, they develop a huge appetite for plants so I would do some research before putting them in there.

Tetras, rasboras etc would be perfect for a planted tank.

u could get some rams (apistos, gbr, bolivian)

this depend on what type of rainbows you are getting as you didn't specific.

Silver dollar like to be in groups so two will not do as they feel unsafe.
