Hi just new to this forum. I am very taken on the dirt idea. I already have sand in my tank and i was wondering if anyone had experience with using sand  to cap dirt i know its not recommended so i was thinking of only using dirt around the edges of my tank where i plant to grow the plants, capping that with gravel and then putting san on top? Is that a terrible idea? I dono how to really use this forum so if im in the wrong place please let me know. :) cheers.

dirt with sand ..... bad idea...

to dirt, u must take out the sand

is there a way to cap the dirt with gravel and use sand in my foreground. i want corys?

there isn't much you can do ...you will have to take the sand out first.

Yes you can use gravel and sand.  Use the gravel as your main cap, but in the front area where you want the carpet to be leave the gravel very thin.  Then put the sand on top of that thin layer of gravel.  This is done in a lot of aquascapes.  In fact in Takashi Amano's tanks he uses ADA sand in the front few inches for the exact reason.

There is a substrate by flourite in a black sand option you might research that.
