Most people(including myself) seem to be using miracle-gro organic choice potting soil, it's in a yellow/orange bag. It's also generally recommended, if you can, go to an art supply store and buy some red clay and add to the dirt(because red clay is rich in iron), you can just add little chunks or balls around in the dirt.

Just make sure to cap the dirt with either sand or gravel, you personal choice and I've personally used both. The sand seems to do a better job capping it(keeping it from turning the water to a brown muddy mess), but it almost does too good of a job and cause air bubbles to get trapped under it so I poke at it every few days with one of those aquagardener tools.

To jus add a bit to wat Doug said make sure you have adequate lights o grow plants

thank you for your help but is there any amount of clay do i have to use or just wahtever

You can use clay pellets to cover your dirt - about an inch or whatever it takes to keep the dirt from clouding your view. Clay pellets are sold as non-clumping kitty litter, Turface or Oil-sorb. Just make sure what you're buying is pure clay.
