Green algae

I have this everywhere. It is all over my sand and is not a carpet, but almost like a green dye. I recently got better t5 lights. I dose with ferts, but is has gotten on my plants too. Also on my anubius there is almost speckled dirt looking dots on it. I can not scrape it off. Help it also got in my filter but I changed the padding.

I had the same problem. I ended up turning off one of my new T5's and cutting back the hours of my remaing T5 bulb. Then came the job of cleaning the algae. Read my thread. Folks here give varied and good advice. My tank is looking good again. Looks like the fish store people like selling powerful, expensive lights that create more problems.

ok thanks i lowered the hours for the light and I will be doing a huge water change on the weekend. After that I will cut down food and get a floating plant

It will work.... I still have a slight green film on my glass that I clean off every Saturday morning when I do my water change. Before I had plants and my "new" lights, I maintained my tank one a month. Would like to try a dirted tank to see if it creates better balance, but I may need to get another tank. Don't want to break down my existing 55 gallon tank.

Ya thanks for the replies I too want to start a dirted tank. I might just do eco complete to make it eaiser. I heard good stuff about that. I might switch soon but can you put cory cats in eco complete without them hurting there whiskers?
