I've got a new betta coming in a few days for my 12 gallon Fluval Edge and I was wondering what tank mates people have had with little to no problems. I have a betta in my original tank with some neons and cories and apart from him eating two of the neons when we had a long weekend and he didn't get fed for four days (the fish are at my work office) there hasn't been any problems.

But, I don't want two identical tanks. So what tank buddies would do well with a betta from your experience?

I have two otto cats with my betta, and things are going well; he chased them for a little while but now accepts that they're not going anywhere.  I suggest that you add your new betta after any other tankmates.

The only way that I could keep him out of the new tank to add the others first would be to put him in a breeding trap thing in my established tank, but he would be able to see my other betta and it might stress him excessively after a two day trip in a box for shipping.

Alternatively, I could put him in a 1.5 gal bowl on his own, but there's no way to heat or filter it due to the shape. I know he'd more than likely be fine in there for a few days, but I hate seeing bettas in jars. What would be the lesser of two evils?

If those were my choices, I'd opt for the 2nd one.  My betta was in a large, brandy-snifter-shaped bowl for a while before I got his tank established; he was just fine in there.

Also, I've heard many stories about a betta killing off new tank mates because they're so territorial, so I'd seriously consider adding your betta last.

I've heard you can keep angelfish with them but I'm not completely sure
What! No angelfish will destroy the Betta it has happen to me I have two breeding pairs and u wouldn't be able to put an angelfish in a 12 gal to small atleast a twenty gal

I have an Otto catfish, 8 neon tetras and 4 ghost shrimp in my 20 long along side with my halfmoon. My halfmoon chases the neons around sometimes but he stays in certain parts of the tank where there isn't any current. I agree that its a good idea to have the tank mates before just so that they can establish first to the tank and see hiding places. Thats another thing its important to have a good amount of hiding spots for your fish. The betta can sometimes will sometimes decide to chase them so keep that in mind

Pretty much any peaceful tropical community fish should work. (besides guppies)I have kept betta with platy, corydora, and soon some rasboras. It is always a good idea to have a backup plan for the betta just in case it doesn't work out. Some bettas are more territorial than others. Make sure there are plenty of hiding spots or heavily plant that tank and you should be good. :)

What is everyones opinions on Danios? They're such hypo, crazy fish, but I figure they won't be intimidated by the betta and since the tank is going to be heavily planted and have a fair amount of hardscape too, I'm thinking that the betta will have lots of places to hide.

People say that the fast movements of Danios can stress a slow-moving betta though, so would it be a safer option to set up the betta in the bowl I previously mentioned and wait for the nitrogen cycle to complete? Once it has I'm gonna take the danios back and get some platys and rasboras.
Also, does anyone have any experience with bettas and dwarf gouramis? Despite looking nothing alike, I have heard people say they can be a bad mix
Dwarf Groumais and bettas are a no no I tried and ended up losing my favorite platinum Betta :(

anything that moves fast. doesnt have long fins and wont annyoy the betta is fine, they cam be kept with almost every type of tetra and cory try a school of 7 cardinal tetra in the fuval edge 2 with him
