 I just got one for my 40 gal about 3 weeks ago and when i got it i was really disapointed in it. It was this dinky little thing with tiny hoses and cheapo lookin was expecting something more substantial.  But so far it works great! The water is crystal clear it is silent and best of all it only uses 8 watts! that was the main reason i got it. havent cleaned it out yet but i got the hose valves so it should not be a prob priming it.

I use the larger version of that filter.  Noise level is great, the biomedia is very good.  The initial prime was kind of a pain and it is a pain to clean and I have to clear out air pockets after cleaning. I highly recommend getting some mesh bags or something to contain your biomedia. It doesn't have the easy prime feature some other canisters have.  As for water clarity it's great, I would rate it an equal level as the aquaclear HOB's for mechanical filtration.  I would agree with darren, the hose sucks ass, after 1-2 years the thing fell apart, I repaired it by trimming back the hose and putting it back together.  I really like how the return flow is designed though, the current is not too powerful doesn't disturb my fish.

Just make sure you get the + version or you won't get the taps or media. I picked up a second hand one for dirt cheap, it's alot smaller than i thought it would be but the media inside it is very good and the media compacts well inside the filter so you can get alot in. Im very happy with it and would strongly recommend it over something internal. I got mine for less than half of the price of a new fluval u4.
