I have 6 jewel cichlids, 2 pairs and I've never been able to figure it out except that the males are bigger.

SOME People say its in the tail... It isn't entirely correct but, If the spots on the tail go all the way through, its a Male. If the spots DON'T go all the way (or just the very tip has spots) Its a female. The males also have a more bright overall Coloration! Hope I Helped!:)

I know this is old but ive breed them before and ive found that looking at there foreheads  from the sides shows that one gender has a flat forehead and the other has a rounded one. I cant exactly remember but thats always worked for me.
