I had someone tell me Discus need around 87. This was from someone I trust at my lfs. Seemed really high to me though.
I've had people also indicate that if you run the water warmer you have less chance of things like ICK. Not sure on that one but it makes sense. The flu season for humans doesn't run during the months of July and August. ;-)
The problem I find is keeping my tank from getting too warm. With a custom hood and T5HO lights it tends to run up as high as 84 and down to 81 in the morning.
Good question and I don't know there is an easy or right answer here. Looking forward to what others have to say...
The higher temperatures does make them want to eat more. It also encourages faster growth. I've also found a higher temperature helps them have more color but it may be more to do with quality food and eating more.
