I can tell you how I keep mine:

1) They're in acidic water where the PH can get in the 5s.

2) The water is also very soft - not quite RO water but close.

3) They were tied to a piece of driftwood (African root) but now their roots are embedded in the wood.

4) They mostly live in the dark - weak florescent lighting filtered through floating plants from above and two hours of direct sunlight from the side of the tank.

5) no ferts, no co2, no nothing.

You're silly to even worry about keeping java fern alive. Its said to be the most hardest and most beginner plant there is out there. It can be grown in tropical and cold water setups with any type of fish. There's huge PH and perimeters the plant can handle so there's no need to worry about your water chemistry. The only 2 things you need to know about Fern is, it grows better either floating around, or attached to wood, and the need leaves from the mother plant drop off after the mother leaf dies back. So dont think your plant is dieing because some leaves have turned black.

thanks for the info:)))

itIts java fern it will grow anywhere
