So I have a 55g tank with all accessories but a small filter. I was wondering if a small filter is enough for a 55 gallon. If not, would two small filters be enough?

Alright, Thanks for the info! appreciate it.

sweet thanks!

I got two tetra ex 70's on my 55
What kind is it?  Small isn't really much info.  In the manual it should tell you the Gallons Per Hour.  You want your filter to move at least 3 times as many gallons as your total tank per hour.  So if you have a 55 you want your filter to at least move 165 gallons per hour.  This of course is somewhat foggy like most aquarium "rules".  My filter is an Aquaclear.  It actually works better on the slow setting because the water has more time in the filter media and will trap more debris.
you might wanna invest into a canister filter that big size tank. This helps save alot of money and electric.

When going to a tank 55 gallon or above, I personally think its better to get a Canister filter. The reason why because they can handle the load with higher flow/filter rate. Plus they just look nice and able

to direct the direction of flow.

alright, thanks for the info!

if its a heavily planted tank its ok to under filter a little. if you have a 30g hob on there you might be alright if your bio load is small and you have a lot of plants but you will need a powerhead or something for water ciculation because you'll end up with dead spots. personally i wouldn't use a canister for a 55g. 1 they make hobs for that. 2 canisters are expensive. 3. they can break and leak leaveing your tank drained on the floor. i just use 2 30g hobs on my 55g because it filters well and i don't end up with dead spots like you do with 1 55g hob. if its a planted tank i would go with hobs

you do know the function of a spray bar that comes with the canister is for right? much better than HOB.

And no..I never experience any leak ...because I know what to do each time i open it up. Most ppl that have leak don't know what to do after they open it up.

I personally run a canister with a HOb, to each his own I suppose, but like the rest say 2 smaller HOB's is better.
i have two 55 gallon side by side and one has fluval 405 plus and small finnex px360 and the other 55 gallon i have two fluval 305,s....so the answer is TWO !!!!!
