I love AquaClears.  I had one last around 15 years before I replaced it!
Depends I think on what ur needs are. I have a marineland biowheel and an aquaclear on my 40gal. The biowheel has a longer tube and I have a deepe than normal tanks I need the long tube. However it doesn't have that great of an impeller design. It's always getting stuck and doesn't flow much water to begin with. My aquaclear can flow the hell out of some water infact when I do water changes I fill a big bucket with like 20g of water and just run a hose from the bucket to the intake of the filter and it sucks it in for me. But the tube doesn't even reach halfway down my tank.
They sell extension tubes for the aquaclear filters.

they do.

ive used aquaclear and marineland, i hear fluval canister filters are good, my uncle had one on his 125 for years he never clened it and it worked for years

my favor filter right now are canister filters!

save me lots lots of money and less maintenance plus they pump alot and filter very good!

I use to be a big Eheim fanboy (the simple design just a no-by bypass and saving money on media also helped a lot, plus all the bacteria I could colonize was incredible)

I didn't buy an Aquaclear because I didn't have much trust in Fluval since I heard their canister filters aren't as amazing as the Eheims, I got lots of recommendations for the Aquaclear and I figured I'd try it out on a small scale before I went and grabbed the biggest model, and of course; I'm incredibly impressed.  I own an Aqueon filter too and its a great filter, its just that the Aquaclear is a fantastic filter (you don't have to worry about uncycling your filter whenever you change the cartridge, and its own bio media is a lot more impressive then that 'wet dry trickle filter' in the Aqueon (NO DISS).

I'm big on canister filters.  I had an old Eheim in the late 80's and used to love them.

Currently I'm using a Fluval FX5 and think it's the best filter on the market.  It's actually got a computer controller module.

They are pricy but I've seen them on Buy.com for a little over $200 with free shipping.  That's a great deal.

One thing I learned from Germany and Europeans when I visited over there.  They spend all of their money on a filter, not a tank.  It makes it easier to keep it clean and you flush less fish that way.  I would have to agree with that school of thought.

My very first tank was a 20 long with an undergravel filter.  What a nightmare to clean and what a terrible concept.  Folks where still doing that in the US but when I went to Europe in the early 80's and saw their live plants and how everyone there was on a canister filter I was sold.

I've got a cousin who uses a bio-wheel on his salt tank and even though it isn't supposed to work he has been using it fine for years.

Dustin loves the hanging filters.  So I think it is personal taste on 'type' but by all means get a good quality one whichever type you decide to use.

I have an Aquaclear and think it's great.  I wanted a canister for a while, but all the leaking stories scared me off.  It pumps well and I think the best part is the customization.  You can put in whatever media you want.  I use just sponge and beads, but if I want to put in peat, phosguard, purigen...whatever you just use a mesh bag and toss it in.  Really good design for those that want to tweak things.

leaking is due to poor maintance when not lubing the o rings and don't overtight fittings or you will break them...( i learn).

I have been using eheim classic for 1 year now..no problem expect i overtight the fitting and spring a crack...but got it replace.

nothing special just a regular hang on the back filter...regardless of who made it as long as it has a lot of room for filter media and good flow I'm not fussy :)
