Ok so I'm going to salvage a spa I have that came with my house and build an above ground pond next to my house. Building a rectangular box with a hidden compartment for the pump and such is easy. I already have the plans laid out. I know I'm going to go with a koi fish and do it with and Asian flair. The questions are should I put dirt at the bottom with rocks or just rocks and what kind of plants are good in a pond? I want something that flowers. Can take high heat and long summer days because I live in Arizona. I know swords will do well but I need more than that. I was thinking bamboo too.

If you want a koi pond, you do not want ANYTHING in the main part of the pond.  You want a smooth bottom with a bottom drain feeding your filter.  Koi crap a lot!!  They will also root around in potted plants which will cloud the water.  The focal point of a koi pond is the koi, not plants.  If you want a water garden, get some goldfish.  Goldfish have some nice colorsand paterns too.  If you have any questions about koi ponds, shoot me a message.  I have had my small pond for about seven years.
Your not worried the fish will boil ? Fish & chips ?jsk
why would you wanna put dirt on the bottom of a pond lol i mean you could but the nutrients levels would sky rockey like dirt from a dirt tanks? i have sand and gravel on the bottom of mine i guess you guys don't get frost if your doing koi i hope you have a 1000+ gallons because they get 3-4 foot long if taken care of when doing plants go to lowes they have a lot of begginer plants that are hardy
