Does anyone know a good place to buy trumpet snails? I just set up my first planted tank and went with black sand for looks. Then of course I found out that sand inhibits soil airation and snails or clams are recommended to stir up the soil to prevent anaerobic soil conditions. So anyways I am looking for a place to get the snails, unless anyone thinks clams would be better. I know where to get some clams but I just think that they may not do as good of a job airating the soil. Any help would be great.

ur LFS should be able to order you some...if not..

aquabid...ebay..amazon

My LFS never got any MTS in so I just went to Ebay. Not bad on price. Think I got 25 for $8. They are better than clams for aeration. Clams somehow soak up excess nitrates. Never looked into how they do it.
that is not bad for the price! good luck
How many do you think I would need for a 36 gal bow front?
You won't need many to start, they are prolific breeders.

Clams get their food from the water.  They are a filter feeder if I'm not mistaken.  The danger is they can bury and die on you and really foul up the water.  I considered them at one time but I was worried about that.  One person suggested putting a potted plant container in the soil and placing them in that so you can easily find them.

The also seem to prefer cooler water.
