Hello everyone I just joined the forum. I just started a a third tank the other day with the hopes if it being my first dirted tank. I layed out 2 inches of organic miracle grow and capped it with some river pebbles. My predicament comes now where I (due to lack of funds) I am stuck to one filter, which is currently supporting a established tank. The est. tanks' fish along with plants will be making the move to the dirted. My plan was to gradually remove est. tanks water to dirted via its pwc's till I the dieted has been adequately filled allowing the fish plants and filter to move with minimal shock.. Is this feasible or am I overlooking any possible problems...? Any advice is appreciated...

Ps. The dirted tanks has been filled (and refilled) to where the water shows clear..

So wat ur saying is ur gonna move 50% of ur water to ur dirted tank, them move fish and plants, then finish fillin it up with water? Or am i reading it wrong, but n e how having just 1 filter isnt a big deal. U can do it
Kool beans and thanks for the advice... I went ahead and made the switch today and so far the fish look healthy and active...
Now if I can pick your brain puh-leeez (and any one else willing to chime in)..
With a newly establish fitted tank what are some possible issues/problems that can arise if any (hopefully not).. I heard of serious algae blooms and ammonia/nitrites/nitrate spikes.. How can I avoid/solve these? And is there anything else I should be on the look out for..?
Sorry for the overload on questions and again, any advice is GREATLY appreciated.
Not that many issues with dirted tanks. Just lots o excess mineral. U can solve that by doing a wc a week or every 2 weeks. If ur dirt layer is too big get ready for anerobic conditions and ur dirt layer will constantly release bubbles tht will bring dirt up with them. U can try poking at ur substrate with a skewer or tothpick to release the bubbles while their still small. Also try not to move plants once u put them in. Especially a sword plant thats been established awhile.
Dude your de $h!+ !!!! I've posted this thread in several forums and you've been the only one to point this out (anaerobic activity)... After doing research on what you said its seems to be regarded as "The Silent Killer".
In addition to the solution you given (poking holes in the dirt) it said a well planted root system can diffuse this from ever taking place..
My new question (if you don't mind answering) is would you consider a 1.5inch soil layer caped with a 1inch pebble substrate to big/deep (10 gallon tank) to cause anaerobic activity.. I have it planted with six swords (the tallest being 5-6 inches in height) 8 stalks of moneywort ( all roughly 5-6 in height)and 7 stalks of anacharis ( average height being 8-9 inches)... Would this create an adequate root system?? I apologize for this long @55 reply but what you said has me about as spooked as a 6 year old and his fear of the boogeyman LOL!!!
1 1/2" of dirt is perfect ull be fine. And u have alot of heavy rooters (swords) to help with aerating the dirt layer
Thanks for putting up with all my questions.. You sir, are a good man.. May God/Peace/The Force be with you (whichever one you believe in lol). Seriously thanks again tho.
