O minus carbon cus it renderes nutrients from the water useless.

In my FX-5 I use only sponges and floss. I do not use any other type of media as the whole point in a planted tank, especially a dirted one, is for the plants to be your filter media. In a heavily planted tank it is more beneficial for your plants to absorb the ammonia and nitrates versus using media to absorb and get rid of them. I have been using this technique with my discus for close to a year and have no issues with water quality, as long as I maintain my regular water changes.
