1-1.5inchs of dirt is fine, I used some aquatic compost I got from a big fish store, most on here I've seen use mirical gro organic potting soil, I'm having good results with the aquatic compost I've got though, I only used this as I couldn't find any of the organic potting soil anywhere local to me.
Use at least 1inch of gravel ontop of the dirt, the dirt should be a thick mud before you add the gravel but not have any water left to absorb. You also need to do big water changes every day for the first 3 days to a week (50-80% water changes)

Most people on here use Miracle grow organic soil or potting.
how much dirt and gravel you use depend on the thickness you want.
1.5 inc of dirt is recommended and 2"+ of fine gravel is recommend.
1" of dirt = 1.5" of gravel to be safe.
