New to the community (as well as the planted tank) Vid + Pics

Hello everyone.  Allow me to introduce myself.. My name is Danny and I live in Miami, Fl.  I'm starting up a 90 gallon tank i've had for months now.  This is going to be my first attempt at a planted tank, though i've kept fish for years in various types of setups.  The tank finally has water in it and I have the filter running.  I'm open to extra filtration suggestions, as well as anything else you guys can think of as far as neccesary equipment goes.  I dont really have a plan which was my reason for making the video I made.  I'm a bit camera shy so I sorta just ramble and forgot to mention some things.  One of those things eing the substrate im using but I took some pictures of the bags afterwards so you guys can see.  My stocking plan for the 90 gallon is as follows :

2 x Leopard Bush Fish

1 x LF BN pleco

1 x Albino BN pleco

1 x Syndontis Petricola

7-8 x Bosemani

6 x Kuhli

1 x Gold Nugget or Green Phantom Pleco (not decided yet)

Most of these fish I already have, some I don't.  I Think I still have room for a little more along the top so I was thinking some hatchet fish or something of the sort.. I'm open to suggestions and would really like to hear some. (any oddball fish?  :p) As I said I have no iea or plan as far as aquascaping and decorations go.. or the best method for delivery of CO2 to my future plants.  Well for now that is all.  Thanks to all who read.  Below is the link to my video and i'll be linking some pics as well.  I'm out.  :D

(though you can't see the substate too well in the video it's one is black.. rocky/sand type look. and the other is same texture but more of a brownish soil like red, though you couldn't tell by looking at the video)

Im not sure what your asking but from the vid:

  • Aquascaping - comes down to basically what appeals to you but their are many sites that show you basic aquascaping

(i used this site as basic for my aquascape)

  • CO2 for plants can be done in two ways D.I.Y.(you can search youtube for vids on how tos) or buy complete CO2 systems ( i use a diy and works fine for me)
  • the substrate you bought (eco-complete) should be adequate for your plants
  • the lighting should be also good
  • fish wise im not sure but you want to make sure their community or compatible with the fish you have now or plan on getting and do not eat  plants

question # 1: ...are u using both of the substrate in the tank?

As for your quesiton: make sure to plan your stuff first.

Like research what kind of plants you like..(check out member's video on here for idea)

As for aquascaping, a quick search on google will help you out on some of the basic as foreground plants and background to midground.

FFTV here has a plant id on top there that can help you choose some plants too.

As for fish, get your current fish settle in first and decide later on.

Well I wont be transferring my fish to the 90 for atleast a month or two.. Still got work to do on the tank.. get all the proper equipment I need.. And yes i'm using both substrates? is that bad?
btw thanks to Chris_t and hmoob for the help an the links.. there is just so many  things i can possibly do i dont want to go crazy and just throw a bunch of stuff int here and want to dismantle everything later to set it up more to my liking.. I want to have a goood plan/layout before hand.. perhaps even draw it out ya know..

Hi Danny,

Have fun with it man!  When I did my first planted tank, I did a ton of reseach and almost drove myself crazy with all the shit you can find on the forums (i.e.plantedtank.net, APC, etc...).  From a aquascaping perspective, you can search online to get some ideas, but just do what you find appealing.  Regarding substrates, like the other posters said, you are good.  On my lastest tank I skipped out on dirt and went with a laterite base, eco-comp mid and gravel cap mix...mainly bescuase this tank has african cichlids and dirt would be too crazy with all the digging.  When it comes to Co2, I would let your platned tank get established then I would say either go with liquid carbon (i.e. flourish excel) or a complete system (if you have the $).  I have used DIY in the past and it works to some extent, but becomes cumbersome and can be incosistent.

Anyway, good luck.

Later,

-N

Hey nick, thanks for the info.  How exactly is liquid carbon? like drops I can just put in the tank? how does that work.  What brands would be good ?
(oh i see now you mentioned flourish excel, going to look into that.)
