A little gravel will work just fine. I have a java moss wall in my tank and it will take over and grow on everything even other plants but my fish and fry realy like it. Dont forget to use your gravel vac, this stuff collects all kinds of junk.

want it as a carpet for the hole tank or a part of it ? a easy way is to find a big flat stone and stick the moss to it with fishing line and bury the stone in the gravel, another thing you could do is put java moss betwen the gravel and a big stone or something heavy and use it to press the moss down on the gravel and after a week or 2 you should be able to remove the stone and if your lucky it sticks to the gravel and not under side of the stone. probably some that use java moss that will have better suggestions. havent used it that much myself  so just those two i could remember right now

Well, first of all. I dont really think that Javamoss is best suited for carpeting. The reason why?

Because the "leaves" (don't know how you call it in proper English) are to big and you have to trim it the whole time

 

But on the other hand it is a really nice plant and just like mattew said fish will realy like it..

I always leave the moss half-floating because its almost impossible to flatten it out properly, and when they start to really leave the ground I just press the moss a little in the sand again.

 

So its doable, but if you really emphasised this question on carpeting and not on the importance of the moss, I should pick another plant.

you can make a wall on the side of the tank but as for carpet...not so good.

 

they float around and it would be a mess

Don't do Java Moss as a carpet plant.  1. It gets everywhere and is a real pain especially if you have a high tech tank.  2. There are much better options.  Glosso, HC, hairgrass, dwarf sag...could go on for a while, but moss would be at the bottom of the list.

Riccia fluitans works good to but a little more work to get it to look good so i would probably go for dwarf sag

I have Riccia too and I'd put it in the same boat as Java Moss as a pain in the ass.  It looks great, but it just won't grab to any substrate.  It's fine if you are putting in on wood, rocks or a mat.
