How much nutrient life does each one have? Obviously garden has more nutrients but does it mean better? Or longrr

garden might have more nutrients but there might be more stuff leeching out and more water change/algae.

garden soils usually have manure or compost in it, at least from what I seen.

Alright my turn to chime in. I've used both. The diff between potting and garden is the micro beads that hold water to allow you to water your plants only once a week vs every other day. Otherwise if you stay with the organic stuff it's the exact same compost. Soil with wood. No ferts just the addition of beads. I will say though with the potting soil the water won't turn quite as brown as fast. But I always for the soil cheaper then the potting mix so I'd go with it. Unless its a small tank. A small bag of potting soil can do a 20g tank. And I never seen the soil in a small bag. But the little white water beads is ur diff.

For the few dollars it costs, all organic potting soil would be better. Commercial potting soils are treated (oven or steam) to remove pathogens and soil borne diseases making them a much better choice to start off with.

Also, you can't be sure with most any garden soils that there aren't residual chemical (fertilizer/insecticides) additives that would leach into your tank water and cause harm. 

On the other hand, if you have a nutrient rich, organic garden, free of 'cides' (herbicides, pesticides, etc.) you might be okay.
