I would go with the potting
For the few dollars it costs, all organic potting soil would be better. Commercial potting soils are treated (oven or steam) to remove pathogens and soil borne diseases making them a much better choice to start off with.
Also, you can't be sure with most any garden soils that there aren't residual chemical (fertilizer/insecticides) additives that would leach into your tank water and cause harm.
On the other hand, if you have a nutrient rich, organic garden, free of 'cides' (herbicides, pesticides, etc.) you might be okay.
