I just set up a new 35 gallon, with dirt... I have about 2 inches of dirt on the bottom covered with about 2 1/2 inches of fine black gravel on top. I put tons of plants in there (not all at once of course), starting 2 weeks after I set it up. I had been changing the water day, and the water was doing just fine.
