How to stop little fish from being killed by filterf

I have a Marineland c530 canister filter that is sucking up the small fish, neons, to the intake and killing them.  Any ideas on how to put something over the intake to lessen the intake pressure by increasing the size of the intake?

I vote sponge. We tried the panty hose method because the kuhli loaches would swim up the intake and party in the canister. That was a royal pain.

i have used the panty hose method and the baby fish would just get stuck to the panty hose because the suction was still high but the sponge worked well

I used peice of a white loofah(white so none of the coloring die could harm the fish) and wrapped it around the intake with a rubber band,,but if it starts to e road make sure to replace it.for this you might have to take the filter out of the water to wrap the rubber band.

Thanks, all.  I did wrap a spong around it and I have not lost any more little fish.  I would think the manufactures of filters with such high suction rate might think about increasing the size of the intake in the first place.  But my little guys seem to be doing fine.
