Does anyone know if you can you use play sand in a african ciclid tank ? or even use beach sand ? or the cheapest sand out their please let me know
play sand is one of the most commonly used sands in aquariums, But it is a very fine sand, almost like sugar. It requires alot of rinsing. If you do not rinse it, expect a cloudy tank whenever the sand is kicked up by the fish.
Beach sand has been used. I myself had my grandfather pick up some sand at the beach, and i used it in my aquarium. Nothing happened, But there are risks with this. Beach sand contains chemicals in it. Sun screen, makeup, and anything that whips off of a persons hands or body goes onto the sand. Use with caution, or don't use at all.
Play sand - . usually comes in a tan color, 30 to 50 lbs bags, price 3 to 6 dollars. Rinse very well
Blasting sand - usually comes in huge amounts from 50 to 100 lbs bags, price 5 - 20 dollars. Colors very from black to white, rinse aswell.
Pool filter sand - If you live in a area with a pool store, you can usualy find this stuff. Pool filter sand ranges from 30 to 50 lbs bags. This can sometimes be very expensive. But it comes in a very very bright white color. 10 - 50 dollars depending on bag size and store.
Beach sand - Absolutely free, But remember that there is always risk of urine, feces, chemicals, bacteria, or parasites in the sand. Use with risk. rinse very very well
