There are no photos to share but I wanted to quickly write an entry just to say that watching Australian Rainbowfish grow is a real treat. I love watching their development. I like watching them turn into individuals and establish dominance and rank in the tank. It's a wonderful experience of patience that pays off a thousand fold.

Fish behavior is maybe the most fascinating part of the hobby. I've got a man-made pond in my back yard where I release fish in the summer. This is the closest thing you'll get to watching fish in the wild.

How does a school of 20 Angelfish behave in a "wild" setting?

Do bettas really like to stay put?

How do Oscars hunt?

Are Discus really shy?

Why do female Guppies like to hang out together away from males? (You might like that one)

LOL

I'm not trying to hang out AWAY from males, I just sort of ... LOL..... you make me laugh....LOL ...I just sort of need another girl ya know to hang out with online and talk about fish. Maybe that's what the female guppies are doing. They're talking about how the color in their tails is coming along, about snails and new blooms on the aquatic plants and which male guppy has it goin' on.

I agree, watching fish is one of the most fascinating things around.

I used to have a guppy pond in my living room but that was way too much water in 700 square feet. I also had 2, 60 gallon tanks going and a few 20's. It was way too much water so when I move the pond will be set up outside and I'll have all sorts of fun with it. :-)

I understand about the girl stuff. I'm just messin with you...

Wish I knew what the female guppies were saying but they stay far away from male humans too...

You had a guppy pond in your living room? That's hardcore - safe to say you'll find someone to talk to on this site. Dustin's pretty fanatical when it comes to "the hobby" - as he likes to call it. A lot of people on this site take after him.

This is off topic but I mined some ice today from my pond to melt and add to my Discus tank. (My pond is composed of rainwater which Discus like) Anyway, after melting the ice and heating it up I found what looked like some tiny, newly hatched, mosquito larvae on the bottom of the water bucket. I think its interesting how mosquito(?) eggs can survive encased in ice. Its about 0 degrees fahrenheit here.

I may add Rainbows to the pond this summer. They're a great pond fish and will breed like rabbits (or guppies for that matter). Fish store owners say they're in demand - not surprising - they're a beautiful fish and one of Dustin's favorites.
