Enjoy the fruits of my labor

I used to really enjoy doing different projects with the fish tanks. I was pleased to take in fish from others who needed assistance or to give a fish a home who needed one. But, the last year and a half has been rough, so my thoughts concerning my tanks has changed. I think I'd like to keep a set up without changing it and keep the tanks I have without taking on any projects.  I will let the tanks change naturally of course, but I'm not going to attempt anything…

Time to stop fish aggression

I had a beautiful sail fin black molly in with my fish. That boy is big and beautiful but he's aggressive. I wanted so badly to keep him in there and cater to his likes and dislikes. I had to make a decision though, do I keep him in there because he's that big and beautiful or do I continue to let him bully and watch his victims fail to…

My Goldfish "kiss" on the lips several times a day

Something tells me this isn't just cute behavior. Why do my two goldies kiss on the lips several times a day? It's a 'quick' kiss then they move on but they do it several times a day. They're about 6 inches each in a 90 alone. They've got a good amount of java fern on driftwood. They know how to tear up on some duckweed, but I have a free supply of that from my friend. My main question is this, why the kissing?

Can I use slate/ceramic floor tiles in my aquarium?

I purchased some ceramic/slate tiles from Lowes and was wondering if they are safe to use in the aquarium. I have several sizes. None of these have ever been used on a floor. They are whole, no broken pieces. Are they safe to use in an aquarium? If one ends up broken is it safe to use?

Are they safe to use whole?

Are they safe to use broken?

Labels for Newbies

I've learned a lot from this site. I've watched videos and looked at photos. I've read posts and voyeured in the chatroom. I am seeing different types of angel fish, different cichlids and all sorts of fish I didn't currently have much interest in, but have now done a little outside reading on.

From reading the site and such, I can name plant species correctly and identify different rainbow fish species by name. However, there is a frustrating thing I must bring up. Many times I see…

It Never Gets Old

No matter how many times I've seen it, the birth of fry never gets old.

No matter how many new blooms I see on my plants, it never gets old. Each new plant life, each new fry is met with the same joy as the last, the one before that and the one before that.

Beautiful bright scales, mating dances, even when they establish rank, I enjoy watching it.

I've seen my Bettas pass through Wisteria roots a thousand times, each time as beautiful as the first.

I search for the perfect…

I'm moving! Suggestions on moving fish needed

I'm moving March 1st and I need suggestions on how to move a host of fish. This is what has to be moved.

Aquarium Confessions

I’m a broke aquarist. Most of my aquariums and equipment came from people who know I love fish and simply gave me all their equipment in order to get it out of their house. Both of my 60 gallon set ups were given to me for free because friends or associates got in over their heads, gave up then gave the tanks to me. This is also how I came into possession of my 90 gallon pond which is currently sitting in my closet waiting to be set up after my move.…

'Interest' in several different languages

I was checking a friend's page for updates and saw a comment left on her profile page that was sort of ... interesting. When I read it I thought wow, talk about being open with your feelings. She was just out there with it. Then I thought, well, if this friend got all that 'interest' based on her profile picture alone I might want to update my photo. The profile photo is a good one so it made sense why the interest but it was the level of proposed love that struck me as .... well,…

The Value of a Photograph

I look at my tanks day in and day out. My head is constantly in the tanks checking fins, checking webbed feet and scaleless bodies, but sometimes I miss things. Those things get picked up by the camera and let me know that I may need to do more than a head count and body check. I may need to do more cleaning of rocks and the sides of the tanks.

Today I…

Female Aquarists

There is a severe shortage of women aquarists around me. Where are all the girls? The guys are fine and all but, it would be nice to chat it up with another female aquarist with passion and drive for the craft.

I don't know, it seems important to have another girl. I'm in a mainly male dominated craft. It would be nice to hang out online with another woman who 'gets it'. I'd like to email and go, guess what girl, I had three Japanese Trapdoor snails born today, they're beautiful. Or…

Rainbowfish - Watching Them Grow

There are no photos to share but I wanted to quickly write an entry just to say that watching Australian Rainbowfish grow is a real treat. I love watching their development. I like watching them turn into individuals and establish dominance and rank in the tank. It's a wonderful experience of patience that pays off a thousand fold.

Algae Hair Questions

I'm seeing an increase in algae hair in my betta tanks. I've got several questions.

1. Is it harmful to the betta? I take most of it out and it grows back within a week or so. I'm not disturbed by it, I actually think the hair is kind of pretty, but I'm wondering if it is harmful to the betta in any way.

2. Is it harmful to the java fern and other plants that are in there?

3. I've got a breeder tank for…

Australian Rainbowfish Aquarium Question

Before I go adding anything in this tank I need to know something. I was under the impression that I need to have a bottom environment to help clean up fallen food not eaten by the rainbowfish. I thought that a few bottom dwellers would help keep the tank cleaner and thought maybe a pair of kribensis would be a good idea. Is this the case?

So I guess my main question is this? Should there be a bottom environment for a rainbowfish tank?

Info: The school is…

Fish Room Updates and a Dirt Question

I posted questions about my aquatic frog habitat but I'd like to update info on my Betta tanks and the Australian Rainbowfish.

I was able to update the size of all the Betta homes but one. Despite the 1.5 liter size home of this little red female waiting for a new home, she still has good stuff in with her. She's got a tiny little piece of driftwood with a fern start on it and one water wisteria stem which I make sure doesn't over take her bowl. I'm working as quickly as possible to…

Overstocking Question: 55 tall with Albino Clawed Frogs

I'm aware that this is primarily a place for people who keep fish, however, I'd like to know if anyone can assist with my frog questions.

I've got a 55 gallon tank, tall with 3 Albinos and 3 molten African Clawed Frogs. These guys share a home with 2 goldfish that are about 4 inches each. Originally I just had 3 frogs but one didn't make it then some guy all but abandoned a baby here. Well, I replaced the one that died with 3 babies hoping at least one would survive. All…
