The Asian Freshwater Clam is found in temperate streams, rivers and lakes throughout Southeast Asia.As with other clams, this species is essentially a living filter that filters the water stream within the aquarium. These clams sift through small organic particles in the water and then release clean water back into the aquarium.Freshwater Clams help keep uneaten food, detritus and decaying plant matter out of the aquarium, which helps maintain water quality and lowers nitrate levels.

If necessary the Asian Freshwater Clams diet can be supplemented with invertebrate foods or direct feedings via pipette. If you have fish in your aquarium their waste would be sufficient.

WARNING: Freshwater Clams will not tolerate any copper-based medications and can be adversely affected by even small levels of copper present in the water.

These clamsshould be housed in an aquarium of at least 10 gallons with medium to very fine substrate.(aquarium sand/gravel) The freshwater Clam should not be housed with invertebrate-eating fish.I use them in all 6 of my tanks, waters are crystal clear.

They are a pretty neat little inhabitant and like was stated nitrate filters.  Sometimes, with the freshwater clams I've had, you can see them uncover themselves from the substrate and open to feed.  Then go back down.  One con to the freshwater clam is that if it dies you'll never know and it will sit and rot in the substrate.

Just a heads up too, you need to select a topic in the forum to post. If you don't they will all go into the first available topic which is Aquarium Journals.
