I'm starting to gather the things i need for my new 75 gallon setup. So here's my question......  Which of these 2 ptions would you use and why? 2 x fluval C4 ( http://ca-en.hagen.com/Aquatic/Filtration/Clip-On/14003 ) HOB or Fluval 406 canister http://ca-en.hagen.com/Aquatic/Filtration/External/A217 ? from what I have seen cost wise, the 2 C4's will cost me about 2/3 of what the 406 would.

Thanks

JJ

Canister, more room for media, and you don't have to look at 2 filters on your tank. Good luck!

how about 2 canisters?

I wish i had pockets deep enough to be able to afford 2 canisters.

Id go with the canster more media room, you dont have to listen to water noise and they need cleaning less. but for a HOB i'd go with 2 aquaclear 70's the C4 is still kinda new to the hobby, aquaclear has been around for a long time, there are guys using filters that are 15 years old!

Eheim 2217 cough, cough.  2 would be a good idea 139.99 at Big Al's Online atm.  /shrug heard really good things about this series of canisters.

Aquaclears are from Hagen too, they're basically new and improved Aquaclears. They also have better mechanics, I can get in depth if you want. But for now my advice is if you want a hob filter it's the C Series you want.

A good combination is a HOB filter + a Cannister. You'd put all your bacterial/biological filteration into the cannister and only do maintenance on it every few months or as needed. Then you put all the mechanical and chemical media into the HOB filter where it is easy and quick to change out every month and rinse every week or two. this will insure that when you clean those medias you are not affecting the biological medias.

that being said, theres just on big Fluval FX5 filter on my 75 Gallon Planted Community Tank

They are a bit pricey, but by far the single most impressive peice of aquarium equipment I've ever used, including lights and marine gear. Just a filter I would automatically use on any tank of this size or larger.

i'd go with a canister...or even build a sump to hide all your equipment...especially if it's in a high traffic room or what you consider a "show tank". You could even go through the extra lengths to have no filter, but do frequent water changes(i'd still run a pump/powerhead for water movement)...I dunno, I've read a lot about aquariums and it seems like the options are endless

Save up and splash out on a fluval fx5 i just got one for my 55g and it was the best thing i ever did, its crystal clear after just the last week and tonnes of space for media
