I currently have a Jack Dempsey that is about 6 inches and it is a male. YES you do
need a Big tank. The advice that other have said is very sound as in bigger tank size.
These fish do grow big pretty quiet when they are small till around 6 inches. Around
4-6 inches, you can tell more easily which sex they are and their behavior as in pairing
and looks.
You can easily learn about them by the top Google searches of them.
The pic Avatar is the one I have. It survived during the outage during hurricane Irene of 1 week
in a 55 gallon Long. I had no power or water. The large tanks does help since there is not filtration at all.
Im using a Fluval 205 Canister filter. The name of my JD is actually
Pen-pen. I mean avatar pic of my fish instead of the movie. lol
There are other colorful fish that are fresh water that are peaceful. Just have to go look around. It is so worth it to have a big tank during power outage situations my tank
was in a need of a water change. Being too depending on a filter system is pretty
borderline than the amout of water your tank you have.
Well good luck
