Well, let me start off by saying that you want to plant the tank heavily at the start of a newly dirted tank.  This way the excess nutrients will be taken in by the plants and not by algae.  Stems plants like Luwidgia, rotala, cabomba, najagrass are all good for soaking up nutrients floating in the water (Water column). Duckweed and other floating plants do good to for soaking up algae.  Water sprite (fern) does great job as well.

With that said if you do not have lots of plants 50% daily for the first two weeks and you should be good.

I did 80% for the first 4 days, put my fish back in then did a 50% water change the day after and again the day after that. I've not touched the tank today (other than fed the fish) everything is fine and the fish love the new hiding spots and all the plants

good luck, and put some pictures up when its done! I need to get some new ones of mine, I've since added dwarf sag and some amazon swords
