Cap your dirted tank which ever you like. Sand will cause gases to build under it. Though its soft enough for plant roots to strive through as they please. Perhaps some gravel that are small in size. I personally use both Gravel and Sand to cap my dirted tank. It wont hurt so it has to be the best.
