I have a 90 gallon aquarium that is having a problem with nitrates. The other chemistry, ammonia, nitrites, etc are very good. But my nitrates are sometime higher than I want. Anyone know what to buy and where to buy it to help me keep those nitrates lower? I am using a marineland c530 along with a HOB Tetra filter, a UV and a home made bio filter. Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
how often do you do water changes? in a fishtank nitrate is the usual buildup after time. with plants one can remove the nitrates.
water changes remove nitrates
also remember some peoples water supplies have nitrates in it (this is for those who cant seem to decrease the nitrate level even if they do weekly water changes, filter cleaning, substrate vacuuming)
my client has this issue. he has water that has 20 ppm of nitrate from the tap.
be diligent with water changes and removing dead fish/plant matter or excess food. Over feeding can lead to high nitrates too.
Also, there are these little sponge things that I found at one LFS in Colorado. I believe they are called poly-filter sponges. They just float in the water for a day or 3 and absorb nitrates and waste. once they turn brown (they start off white), throw them away. THey worked relatively well in my old 35 gallon.
another way to deal with nitrate problems is using Purigen. it is also rechargeable as long as you dont use water conditioners that have amines in it
