New tropical tank

Hi, Well I've finally been able to afford our new tropical tank. It's a fish box 40. Or to be more precise it's a 46 litre tropical tank with day light and a blue moonlight bulb as well. I have just 3 different types of plants. Not sure what species they are it's just the ones that are available at our local pet at home store. As soon as I have this cycled my intention is to move over the two harlequin tetras, the two phantom tetras and the male Guppies. I haven't decided about the mums yet as… Continue

Labels for Newbies

I've learned a lot from this site. I've watched videos and looked at photos. I've read posts and voyeured in the chatroom. I am seeing different types of angel fish, different cichlids and all sorts of fish I didn't currently have much interest in, but have now done a little outside reading on.

From reading the site and such, I can name plant species correctly and identify different rainbow fish species by name. However, there is a frustrating thing I must bring up. Many times I see…

Had a bit of a disaster

Well had a bit of a disaster whilst changing the water.

I was busy cleaning the side of the tank and I didn't notice that the nursery tank had tipped up. No all of the fry escaped but some did. I managed to rescue a few but had three that I wasn't able to catch. At least four in total were eaten then there is the three that I couldn't catch. Two were eaten but one has managed to beat all the odds and has survived. He is still managing to evade capture by myself but also by the rest of the… Continue

In need of Fish

Well I am converting my regular 20 gallon fishtank in to a shell dweller tank! I need to know where I can get some shellies. Specifically lamprologus similis. Please put a link to a website for buying those fish. Thank You

From Freshwater to Saltwater....

I've done plenty of freshwater tanks, dirt tanks, artificial... Basically I've mastered the craft.   I have a 30 gallon tank sitting around with nothing in it, and I want to move on to saltwater.  From the research I've done so far, it sounds pretty easy after it's set up. Here are the questions I came up with so far.

1. When adding saltwater for the very first time, do I have to do anything special!!!!  Can't I just get a big huge bucket of water add the salt as directed, measure…

My Guppy fry are 11 days old

Hi all

Well my Guppy fry are doing well they are now 11 days old and I haven't lost any yet.Im amazed I expected to lose about half of them. They are starting to look like mini Guppies now. I held off doing a water change as I thought it may upset the new fry but yesterday I bit the bullet and did a 50% water change and they are all doing fine. I am going to put some pics up of them soon. I just have a small problem now my other Guppy is about ready to pop and I haven't got anywhere to put… Continue

When i first dirted the tank i used some dirt from my backyard and some gravel that was all blue and tanky, now today i went to the store and bought some natural looking gravel , and some miracle grow organice choice soil. so tell me where to start please. :)

Part of a Paper I did for Bio Class (1101 Master's course)

Soft water has more to do with GH than pH. Typical home water softeners soften water using a technique known as "ion exchange''. That is, they remove calcium and magnesium ions by replacing them with sodium ions. Although this does technically make water softer, most fish won't notice the difference. That is, fish that prefer soft water don't like sodium either, and for them such water softeners don't help at all. Thus, home water softeners are not an appropriate way to soften water for…

Guppy babies are 5 day old

Well our babies are now 5 days old. They are still in the nursery box as I think they are still too small to go into the main tank. We have around 20 but every time I count I get a different number. Im feeding then liquifry at the moment. I also bought some bloodworn for them when they get a bit bigger. I'll post some more pictures soon

Water Change Power

So yesterday morning I did my regular water change and tank maintanance on my 40g and 20g.

This morning I wake up and flip on my lights like I would any other day.  I come back to check out the 20 and make sure everything is working out well after moving some wood and plants the day before.  I notice two things; 1) my serpaes are 'blood' red and 2) both them and the neons are swimming and chasing each other around like crazy.  Then to my surprise a spray of neon tetra eggs float right…

Baby Angel Fish

I have a couple of nice Angel Fish in my 65gal aquarium that have laid eggs about seven times & each time they have ate all the eggs.  On March 6th  thought I would give them a hand - I removed the Amazon Sword leaf that they used and put it in a breeder tank with no other fish in it .  Only about 20 eggs hatched and are 11 days old now. I was feeding them frozen bbs for the last few days , not sure if they are eating much of it ???  Today I went out to my local pet shop & bought a…

New sand and Gravel, + Filter improvements...maybe!

I just love spending ages pouring loads of water over new gravel or in this case sand to get it as clean as possible for my beloved aquarium, perhaps just a tad of sarcasm in that part of my blog post. Anyway onto the filter, I don't know if I've caused any potential issues but I've just removed the "check ball" from the intake strainer of my fluval 206 external, and all that seems to have happened is the outflow speed has increased quite a bit for doing so, had a little ponder and during my…

starting over and regrouping

I have been out of the hobby for a few years.  Having kept tanks and fish most of my life. I knew it would only be a matter of time. When my two year old asked for a fish. That was all the incentive I needed. I have a number of tanks just stored away. I pulled out a 20 G LONG.  And took a cut and dry approach. Gold fish were my go to ...

They are attractive fish. Hardy and cold water lovers. They would be the show peace. No need to aqua scape. What would be the point. Gold fish have a…
